Read about the Yeti journey staring in 2021 until its inaugeral race in 2024

Car Preparation

In 2022, a vintage Porsche 944 was gifted to the program and 5 young adults started working in the evenings and weekends on the car. Over the course of two years and 60+ work days, they prepped the car for wheel-to-wheel endurance racing.

Track Training Days

In 2023 the team participated in five test track events, where future drivers learned to push the car to its limits safely and make good decisions at high speeds.

Making It A Safe Racecar

In order to race wheel-to-wheel, there is some extra safety equipment required, such as a full roll cage and a fire suppression system. A friend of The Green Beret Project installed our roll cage and the students did all the rest.

The Yeti Theme

For our first race, we decide to race in a series call “24 hours of Lemons”, which is a play on words for the professional series “24 hours of Lemons”. Lemons races are more about the community, charity and enjoying the weekend than it is about the race. Coming with a strong theme and staying in costume is highly encouraged. We decided on a Yeti theme to honor one of our great sponsors Yeti Coolers.

The car was themed by five Green Beret Project students with the help of a local artist.

It Took A Community

The Yeti Won!

  • Over half of the entries in an endurance race do not finish or miss more than half the race from mechanical failures.

  • Almost all “new builds” do not finish their first race. The Yeti was a brand new build.

  • Almost all rookie teams do not finish their first race. Many rookie teams do not even get to start their first race.

  • The Yeti did not ever leave the track for mechanical reasons.

  • All driver changes and fueling were done on the track.

  • The Yeti team finished in the top 52nd out of almost 144 cars and 20th in our class.
